Sondaggio in Ucraina, 45% CES 33% UE

Ukrainians more likely to support the integration of the state with the Common Economic Space with Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan than integration with the European Union, according to the findings of the poll by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology.

According to the findings, 45% of respondents support joining the CES, while 33% prefer integration with the EU.

At the same time, supporters of the EU joining considerably predominate in the western regions of Ukraine: 63% for integration with the EU, 12% for joining the CES.

In the center of the country the number of those who support European integration is slightly more, at 40% for the EU, and 36% for the CES.

In two other areas there are considerably more supporters of integration with the CES: 62% in the southern regions, and 73% in the eastern regions.

Moreover, 27% of those polled agree that Ukraine should join to the EU even under the condition that Ukraine would have closed borders with Russia – with visas and customs services.

Fifty-four percent of Ukrainian citizens would prefer Ukraine not to be an EU member and have open borders with Russia, without visas and customs services.

About half of those polled, 47%, said Ukraine would join the EU sometime in the future, and 32% think it will not happen.

Kyiv International Institute of Sociology interviewed 1,600 respondents in all Ukrainian regions, in Crimea and Kyiv from Oct. 24 to Nov. 4, 2011.
